In a significant move for the electric vehicle (EV) industry, Ford spearheaded a transformation 18 months ago by securing a deal that granted its EV owners access to the Tesla Supercharger network. This groundbreaking agreement set a precedent, prompting other major automakers such as GM, Hyundai, Rivian, and Mercedes to follow suit. By the close of 2023, almost every prominent automaker had committed to adopting Tesla's North American Charging Standard (NACS), assuring EV owners that adapters were forthcoming.
Despite these promises, many non-Tesla customers are still awaiting the arrival of these adapters. However, a recent announcement from GM has injected a new sense of optimism. GM EV owners, including those of the Chevrolet Silverado EV and Cadillac Lyriq, will now have official access to Tesla's Superchargers. The only requirement is for them to purchase and await the delivery of GM-approved adapters that will enable their vehicles to charge at Tesla stations.
This latest development signifies a step forward in the ongoing effort to create a more interconnected and accessible EV charging infrastructure, potentially paving the way for further collaborations in the future.
