BMW has announced plans on Septembert 5th to collaborate with Toyota to develop a hydrogen fuel-cell consumer car set for series production in 2028. Despite funding dips for green hydrogen startups and the shutdown of hydrogen plants and fueling stations across the U.S., BMW remains committed to the technology.
Juergen Guldner, BMW's general project manager for hydrogen technology, believes hydrogen vehicles can complement the growing battery electric vehicle (BEV) market by addressing the needs of customers who prefer the convenience of refueling like traditional gasoline cars. Speaking at a BMW event during Climate Week NYC, Guldner emphasized the importance of offering choice to change people's behavior.
Jason Munster, founder of hydrogen consulting firm CleanEpic, agrees that a mix of BEV and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles is more cost-effective and sustainable. However, significant challenges remain, including the cost of building out hydrogen infrastructure and the need for renewable hydrogen production.
BMW is working to build a comprehensive ecosystem, including potential partnerships with commercial fleet customers and collaborations with startups through Urban-X. The automaker has received positive feedback from a pilot fleet of hydrogen vehicles tested in over 20 countries.
