Nexperia has announced a new range of AC/DC flyback controllers, including the NEX806, NEX808, and NEX8180 series, developed specifically for GaN-based flyback converters. These devices target applications like Power Delivery (PD) fast chargers, industrial and auxiliary power supplies, wall sockets, and other high-power-density AC/DC conversion requirements. By combining wide VCC ranges with adaptive control capabilities, Nexperia’s new controllers address the demand for compact, efficient, and reliable power management solutions in both consumer and industrial applications.
The NEX80806, one of the highlights of the series, operates in multi-mode, switching seamlessly between Continuous Conduction Mode (CCM), Quasi-Resonant (QR) mode, Discontinuous Conduction Mode (DCM), and Pulse Frequency Modulation (PFM) to ensure optimal efficiency across varying loads. Additionally, the controller activates Burst Mode under low-load or no-load conditions, which significantly reduces standby power consumption. This adaptive approach not only maximizes efficiency but also enables precise output control, especially in applications with fluctuating load demands.
Designed with a compact TSOT23-6 package, the NEX80806 controller is equipped with extensive protection features, including over-voltage, over-current, and thermal shutdown, as well as brown-in/brown-out detection to safeguard the system against voltage irregularities. The synchronous rectification (SR) controller in the NEX8180 series uses advanced adaptive controls to prevent false switching, further enhancing the reliability of GaN power designs.
Nexperia’s latest AC/DC controllers also incorporate valley switching and spread-spectrum capabilities, improving Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) performance and reducing system noise. With switching frequencies reaching up to 130 kHz in peak load mode, these devices offer a significant power density advantage, making them ideal for next-generation compact power designs.
In line with Nexperia's commitment to sustainable and efficient solutions, these new controllers represent a valuable addition to its growing power IC portfolio. The enhanced performance, combined with comprehensive protection mechanisms, ensures reliable power conversion for a range of high-performance applications.
