Panasonic Energy has officially started mass production of its advanced 4680 cylindrical lithium-ion batteries, marking a significant milestone in the electric vehicle (EV) industry. The company announced the launch on September 9, 2024, at its Wakayama plant in Japan, which has been upgraded to focus on producing these next-generation cells.
The 4680 battery format is expected to revolutionize the EV market, offering five times the capacity of the current 2170 batteries, thus extending the driving range of EVs and reducing manufacturing costs. The facility is also aiming to operate with near-zero CO2 emissions, contributing to Panasonic's broader sustainability goals.
Panasonic’s president, Kazuo Tadanobu, emphasized the potential impact of the 4680 cells on the automotive industry, noting that the batteries would play a crucial role in making EVs more accessible and promoting a sustainable society.
