Tesla CEO Elon Musk has debunked claims that his AI startup, xAI, will license its models to Tesla for enhancing Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology. Musk stated that while Tesla has benefited from discussions with xAI engineers, there is no need to license their AI models. He further explained that xAI's models are far too large to run on Tesla’s vehicle computers, and Tesla’s FSD system is already achieving significant advancements on its own.
The rumors of a partnership surfaced after a report suggested Tesla would use xAI technology to bolster FSD, and xAI would earn revenue in return. Musk firmly denied these claims, stating that Tesla’s real-world AI models, which process video data for self-driving, are specifically designed to be highly efficient and focused on autonomous driving tasks.
Musk’s xAI, launched in 2023, continues to focus on broader AI goals, with its massive Colossus supercomputer powering their model development. However, the direct integration of xAI technology into Tesla’s systems is not part of the plan.
