The Loongson 9A1000 GPU, expected to reach code freeze by the end of 2024, is positioned as an entry-level graphics card with performance comparable to the AMD Radeon RX 550. The RX 550 is known for around 1.2 TFLOPS of FP32 performance, which aligns with Loongson’s goals of creating a domestic alternative to foreign GPUs. This GPU will serve as a modest but important step toward China's goal of self-sufficiency in hardware development. It is set to launch in 2025.
Notably, the 9A2000 GPU, a successor to the 9A1000, is expected to offer a significant performance leap—about 8 to 10 times that of the 9A1000. While this increase in performance is ambitious, it highlights Loongson's ongoing efforts to close the gap with more advanced GPUs, despite limitations posed by U.S. export restrictions on advanced semiconductors.
This project is critical for China's efforts to build a robust domestic GPU industry, aiming at uses beyond gaming, including scientific computing and AI tasks.
